Refrigerator Not Cooling But Freezer Works? Here's Why

If your freezer is working perfectly but the refrigerator section feels like room temperature, you're dealing with one of the most common fridge complaints in Greater Boston. The good news: this symptom almost always points to an airflow problem, not a failed compressor — and that means repair is usually worthwhile.

Why Does This Happen?

Most refrigerators use a single compressor and evaporator. Cold air is generated in the freezer section and then circulated into the fridge compartment via a fan. When that circulation breaks down, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up.

5 Most Common Causes

1. Evaporator Fan Motor Failure

The evaporator fan pulls cold air from the freezer and pushes it into the fridge section. When this motor fails or the fan blade gets blocked by ice, cold air stops moving. Listen for unusual noise from behind the freezer wall — a failing fan often buzzes or rattles before it stops completely.

2. Frost Buildup on the Evaporator Coils

If the automatic defrost system fails, ice accumulates on the evaporator coils and blocks airflow entirely. This is one of the most frequent causes of exactly this symptom. Your technician will check the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and the main control board.

Quick check: Unplug your fridge for 24–48 hours with the doors open. If it works normally afterward for a few days before failing again, a defrost system fault is almost certainly the cause.

3. Damper or Air Diffuser Problem

The damper is a small door that controls how much cold air flows from the freezer into the fridge. If it gets stuck closed — due to ice, a broken actuator, or a failed thermostat sensor — your fridge will warm up even while the freezer runs fine.

4. Dirty Condenser Coils

Condenser coils on the back or bottom of your fridge release heat into the room. When they're coated in dust and pet hair, the compressor works harder and the overall system efficiency drops. This can cause the fridge section to underperform while the freezer holds temperature.

5. Door Gasket Failure

A worn or torn door seal on the fridge compartment lets warm room air in constantly. The fridge struggles to stay cold while the freezer (with a better seal) holds its temperature. Close a piece of paper in the door — if it slides out easily, the gasket needs replacing.

When to Call a Technician

If the 24-hour defrost test doesn't solve the problem, or if the issue returns within a week, call a professional. A technician can accurately diagnose which component has failed without the guesswork — and in most cases, parts and labor for a fridge repair cost significantly less than a new appliance.
