Glasses and cups that come out of the dishwasher still cloudy or with food residue are frustrating — especially when the bottom rack is perfectly clean. This specific symptom (top rack fails, bottom rack fine) is one of the most diagnosable dishwasher problems there is, and it rarely means you need a new machine.
Why Only the Top Rack?
Most dishwashers have separate spray arms for the upper and lower racks. The upper spray arm has a harder job — it has to push water pressure higher against gravity. Any reduction in pressure or flow disproportionately affects the top rack first.
1. Clogged Upper Spray Arm
The upper spray arm has small holes that jet water at the top rack dishes. Mineral deposits from hard water (common in the Boston area) and food debris block these holes over time. Remove the spray arm — it usually twists off or clips out — and rinse it under the tap. Use a toothpick or thin wire to clear any clogged holes. Reinstall and run a cycle.
2. Low Water Inlet Pressure
The dishwasher needs sufficient water pressure to push water up to the top rack. If your home water pressure has dropped (due to a partially closed shutoff valve, a failing inlet valve, or municipal pressure changes), the upper arm suffers first. Check that the water shutoff valve under the sink is fully open.
3. Clogged Filter or Sump Area
A dirty filter at the bottom of the dishwasher restricts overall water circulation. The lower rack is closer to the pump, so it still gets cleaned — but the upper arm doesn't get enough flow. Check your manual for filter location (usually a twist-out cylinder at the base of the tub) and clean it monthly.
4. Detergent Dispenser Failing to Open
If the dispenser door doesn't open mid-cycle, the detergent dumps in early (when water pressure is low) or not at all. Soap residue buildup around the dispenser latch is the most common cause. Clean the dispenser door area and test with a fresh pod placed loose in the bottom of the tub.
5. Failing Wash Pump or Motor
If all the above checks out and the top rack is still dirty, the circulation pump may be underperforming. A weakening pump delivers less pressure overall — and as above, the top rack notices first. This requires a technician to diagnose and repair.
When to Call
Spray arm cleaning and filter cleaning are quick DIY tasks. If those don't resolve the issue, or if you hear grinding or unusual sounds from the pump, it's time to call a professional. A proper repair is almost always cheaper than a replacement dishwasher.
